Ban all military attacks on nuclear plants
"As global citizens horrified at the prospect of a nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine, we urge you to use the Review Conference of the Non-Proliferation Treaty to call for a ban on all fighting near any nuclear reactor, demilitarizing them, and creating a ‘safe zone’ of at least 30km. We also call on you to demand that Russia grant immediate access to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine for independent inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency."

"WHAT WE MUST DO
Colonizers and capitalists are at the core of every system of oppression that has caused the climate crisis, and decolonization, using the tool of climate reparations, is the best kind of climate action.
The richest capitalist 1%,must be held responsible for their actions and willful ignorance. Their profit is our death. Their profit is our suffering.
Together with different sectors of society across the world, led by the most marginalized, let’s bring back the power to the people whose power has been stolen. Together, let’s build a system and home where we prioritize #PeopleNotProfit."

"After 14 years, the Global Forum returns to the country where it all began in 2008 with the Aarau Forum. Coming out of a devastating public health crisis and moving closer and closer to an irreversible climate disaster, we will have much to discuss. We will look both backwards to the long Swiss tradition of direct democracy and forwards to innovations that combine tools of direct and participatory democracy, to ways to use direct democracy to protect our planet from climate change, and to best practices for youth democracy."

* Charter of the Climate Journalism Network:
"The climate crisis already touches all areas of our lives — and thus all areas of journalism. Climate journalism explains the crisis and shows causes, consequences and solutions.
The climate crisis is not one topic but — like democracy and human rights — is one dimension of every topic. Climate journalism is therefore not limited to individual events and cannot take place solely within narrow departmental and jurisdictional boundaries.
Climate journalism draws on the findings of social and natural sciences in an interdisciplinary manner, keeps an eye on other ecological crises such as species extinction, and is guided by the best research. In light of the urgency of the crisis, climate journalism constructively points out solutions and critically evaluates them to foster informed democratic discourse. (...)

WMO update: 50:50 chance of global temperature temporarily reaching 1.5°C threshold in next five years
"There is a 50:50 chance of the annual average global temperature temporarily reaching 1.5 °C above the pre-industrial level for at least one of the next five years – and the likelihood is increasing with time, according to a new climate update issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
There is a 93% likelihood of at least one year between 2022-2026 becoming the warmest on record and dislodging 2016 from the top ranking. The chance of the five-year average for 2022-2026 being higher than the last five years (2017-2021) is also 93%, according to the Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update, produced by the United Kingdom’s Met Office, the WMO lead centre for such predictions." * Putin's war, Russia's crisis
Very interesting article by Andreas Zumach in Le Monde diplomatique in the 10.3.2022 issue:
""There is no doubt about victims and perpetrators. In the case of Russia's war of aggression against sovereign Ukraine, international law is clear. Whether Putin will end up before an international criminal tribunal is not known. But politically, he will hardly be able to survive his Pyrrhic war with Great Russian objectives."

* AUKUS for War or Australians for Peace.
By dismissing out of date military alliances, Australians could contribute to their own security by promoting policies to achieve peace with justice. That creative, humanitarian goal would engender hope, foster mental and physical health, and become the means of ensuring survival and justice.
We call on all people to reject AUKUS and on the Australian government to cancel the agreement.
We need passion for peace, not preparations for war.

'We the peoples - for inclusive global governance':
The biggest challenges facing humanity such as pandemics, the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, violent conflict, forced displacement, discrimination and inequality are global and cross-cutting in nature. With each passing day, they become more pressing. International collaboration and global governance need to improve significantly and become more accountable to those affected most: the world’s citizens.
On the occasion of the UN’s 75th anniversary, heads of state and government committed to making global governance more inclusive. The UN Secretary-General promised to promote a new model based on full, inclusive and equal participation in global institutions. We agree. It is time to give people a stronger voice in global affairs and at the UN.
We call on the UN and member states to implement three specific institutional changes to strengthen the inclusive and democratic character of the UN:
- A World Citizens' Initiative
- A UN Parliamentary Assembly
- A UN Civil Society Envoy

* Ruling of the German Federal Constitutional Court: Future generations not taken into account.
Climate activists, among others from Fridays for Future, achieved success with their complaint to the Constitutional Court. They criticized that the climate protection plans were not decisive enough and postponed the tougher climate protection measures until after 2030.
The Karlsruhe judges inter alia with reference to Article 20a of the German constitution on the obligation of the state to protect the natural foundations of life and to reduce CO2 emissions earlier and also in a longer-term phased plan: "Virtually every freedom is potentially affected by these future emission reduction obligations, because almost all areas of human life are still associated with the emission of greenhouse gases and thus threatened by drastic restrictions after 2030."
Activist Line Niedeggen explains, "The Federal Constitutional Court confirms with the climate lawsuit what natural science has shown for years: Postponement and insufficient climate targets endanger not only nature, but our right to life and the right to a future".

* IPB World Peace Congress 2021
15 October @ 5:00 pm - 17 October @ 5:00 pm
"The international peace movement is gathering in Barcelona in October! Join us!!
The Second IPB World Congress aims to build on the foundation established during our gathering in Berlin in 2016 by
bringing together vast swathes of civil society groups to cooperate on identifying strategies and solutions to the challenges of our times. With the support of local, national, regional, and international organizations and individuals working for peace, disarmament, climate justice, human rights, and more, the congress will offer something for everyone and inspiration for us all as we strive for a better future after the Coronavirus pandemic.
We have a planetary crisis: a world in which confrontational policies have replaced international cooperation on issues ranging from arms control and common security to the climate emergency, threats to democratic institutions, and health crises – most notably the Covid-19 pandemic. Only by coming together can we address these interlinked and overlapping problems that threaten us all; therefore, our gathering aims not only to bring these groups together, but to envision shared policy solutions that can serve as a call to action for social movements and decision makers at the global, regional, national, and local levels.
At the center of these policy proposals comes the idea of ‘building back better for peace’. The Covid-19 crisis has made clearer than ever the costs of returning to the status quo and the necessity to create a better system – one that promotes equality, addresses the existential threat of climate change, and understands the need for true security, not the faux security of yearly increases in military spending at the cost of social services. We firmly believe that the only way to truly do so is to put peace at the center of the ‘new normal’. "

* A new OSZE summit in 2025!
Dear friends of peace in the Nordic and all Baltic Sea countries
In 2025, it will be 50 years since the CSCE/OSCE Final Act was signed in Helsinki.
For this reason, the President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, has proposed to hold a new summit of major powers in the spirit of the CSCE. The President believes that a new summit could calm the growing tensions between the major powers.
Niinistö believes that in this situation Finland could have the capacity to act as a mediator because the country has a direct discussion relationship with all major powers.
The Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has expressed support for the proposal.
In January 2021, Sweden took over the chairmanship of the OSCE. Foreign Minister Ann Linde then stated that Sweden will during the year work to strengthen the organization's important role in contributing to security in the region.
We have compiled a letter in support of the holding of a new summit. (See below or attachment)
We will send it out to the governments and parliaments of Finland, Sweden, all other countries in the Baltic Sea region and to the media. The letter will also be sent to the leaders of the major powers and the OSCE.
If the summit project progresses, we hope to be able to organize some kind of shadow event for non-governmental organizations.
We sincerely hope that your organization will sign the letter of support before 25.5.2021 by notifying Ulla Klötzer (ullaklotzer(at)yahoo.com)

* A Ministry for Peace and Sustainable Development
A new important initiative is the suggestion for the establishment of a ‚Finnish Ministry of Peace and Sustainable Development‘ presented by the Finnish 'Women for Peace' in March 2021 on the occasion of the International Women's Day. This initiative, supported by some Finnish NGOs, criticizes the waste and misinvestment of societal resources for armament and war. The initiating women call for the establishment of a Finnish ministry that will ensure that a considerable part of the money spent so far on the military is spent on peace, poverty reduction and hunger eradication, and ecological development aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They also call on other countries to establish such ministries to work for a more peaceful, just and environmentally sustainable world.
